beginning of the constructional planning by Clemens August Kardinal von Galen: church & journey house for journeymen and craftsmen (208 beds for durable accupants, 2 dormitories, each dorm with 18 beds, for temporary guests |
1910 |
official laying of the foundation stone, despite that the journey house was already built up to the 3rd floor |
1916-1918 |
auxilary military hospital for 200 wounded soldiers during the 1st world war |
1924-1925 |
several reconstructions – complex: multiple residential buildings (285 rooms), classrooms, among others on the 3rd yard; St. Clemens church with a nunnery section on the 2nd yard; rectory on 1st yard |
1942 |
Gestapo hogs the property and the building because of ‘anti-state activities of the clergy’ > SS home for the companionship |
03.02.1945 |
partial destruction of the complex, depredation and desruction of the church, journey house as far as possible undamaged |
after 1945 |
transit camp for refugees, displaced persons and homecomer (app. 90.000 people) |
1950 |
john’s nuns moving into the building > supporting elderly people and refugees, but also guest |

massive reconstructions, i.e. class rooms and chapel on ground floor, renovation of the sanitary facilities |
