Mehringdamm is one of the most important traffic connections in the southern center of Berlin. It’s part of Federal Highway 96 and a significant commercial street as well as a promenade and shopping mile with numerous bars, clubs, restaurants, and boutiques.
From our centrally located hostel in Berlin on Stresemannstrasse near the Landwehr Canal, Mehringdamm can be easily and quickly reached in about 15 minutes on foot.
Kebab and currywurst – staple foods of the city
Following Mehringdamm straight ahead, you’ll notice the listed Garde-Dragoner-Kaserne from the 1850s on the right. Immediately after that are two famous nightlife institutions: the two always busy and around-the-clock popular snack bars “Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap” and “Curry 36”.
You can easily spend entire afternoons in Viktoriapark
Continuing along Mehringdamm, cafés line up on the left side of the street. In spring and summer, visitors from all over the world sit at dozens of outdoor tables.
A few hundred meters further is Kreuzbergstrasse, where the popular Viktoriapark, just under 13 hectares in size, is also located. The green space is usually densely populated in good weather, and the hilly landscape park features the National Monument for the Wars of Liberation, lawns, a large children’s playground, and a shady beer garden.
Berlin’s eventful history is present here at every turn
After the detour to Bergmannstrasse, you should continue along Mehringdamm to Platz der Luftbrücke at the former Tempelhof Airport. The Berlin Airlift Memorial was erected in 1951 and is sometimes colloquially called the “Hunger Claw”.
