These two public parks are known far beyond Berlin’s city limits. However, they mainly owe their fame to the drug trade that takes place there. That’s a shame, because they have so much more to offer. Both parks are easy to reach from our hostel.
What is Hasenheide?
This public park was opened in 1954. The grounds have a long history dating back to the Great Elector in 1678. In 1811, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn – the “Father of Gymnastics” – opened Prussia’s first gymnastics field in this park.
In the middle of the park, you’ll find the famous 1950s-style kiosk, the Hasenschänke. There is also a mini-golf course, a small zoo, an open-air cinema, a rose garden, a skate park, and various sports fields.
Görlitzer Park
This 14-hectare park is located in the Kreuzberg district. It was created in the late 1980s and early 90s on the site of the old Görlitz railway station. The park features several sports and playgrounds, as well as a children’s farm and an orchard. In summer, spontaneous BBQ parties are often held there.
Summary
If you want to explore Berlin’s multicultural flair, you should take a trip to at least one of these two parks. Especially in summer, they are places where you can quickly meet people and relax. Just be a little careful with your wallet, phone, or other valuables.
